Wild Ginger Hotel

This place has soul! A little run down, but beautiful and surrounded by lush gardens with citrus trees, breadfruit, and orchids. It's a little oasis! Don't expect luxury accommodations but do open the windows and enjoy the jungle sounds wafting into your room. The staff is absolutely amazing: welcoming, gracious, and friendly. Coffee is good and strong and available all day. Breakfast is simple and fresh. I would definitely stay here again.

The room fit my needs: clean, warm shower, quiet, restful sleep. Bonus the staff is very very friendly, kind- it felt very safe! They prepared a very generous spread in the morning that was very delicious especially the banana bread. I was greeted with a very friendly staff member who explained every detail of the accommodations including near by attractions. Despite what other reviews may say, my experience was stellar- even after staying a week at a 4 star resort.

Our stay at the Wild Ginger Hotel was wonderful. The hotel exudes a quaint charm with its lovely views of the ocean and a touch of jungle ambiance, offering a unique and picturesque setting. While the facilities could benefit from a bit of an overhaul, the overall atmosphere more than makes up for it. The staff were friendly and helpful, always ready to assist with a smile. The free breakfast was a nice touch, with decent food to start the day off right. Although the rooms lack air conditioning, the ceiling fans provided a comfortable night's sleep. The 3 hotel cats were friendly and keep the geckos at bay. This is a great hotel to sleep (not a room to lounge in all day) while staying in Hilo.

5 stars not because it is a luxury resort instead the description on the website is accurate. It is older building built in the classic hawaiin wood wall construction. Evidence of small upgrades are visible. If your in Hilo and are not pretentious, a clean comfortable bed and yummy free breakfast can be found here at a very fair price.

This hotel is exactly as advertised: an historic (old), family-run business. The rooms are functional and as clean as they could be, given the age of the building. The room itself was nice, with bamboo floors and new furniture, but there was an area of rotted beam on the ceiling. The bathroom was a little scary, with exposed pipes that were a bit rusty and a dark blue painted floor in the shower. The staff we were in contact were very friendly, but attention to detail could be improved. For example, we didn't have towels in our room (we had 2 washcloths), and we had to ask twice to get some. The breakfast was OK, but there were no plates! I had a question, and I waited 5 minutes while 3 staff members passed me by and talked among themselves. Then someone finally said, "Do you need help?" All that said, the price was great, and it was close to downtown and the farmer's market, restaurants, and other businesses.

It was a shame it burnt down. Hope they rebuild. Had a pleasant stay awhile back. The only thing I wasn’t a fan of was the floor in my hotel room. It wasn’t level and my water bottle could roll “downhill.” Past that, shower water was hot, bed was comfy, and it was a great place to rest my head and fall asleep to the rain and coqui frogs. Staff was always friendly and pleasant.

Enter with an open mind and light heart. After back packing for a night, this was the perfect place. Staff was nice, the room was affordable, and the free breakfast filled our bellies. They do warn that the water takes 15 minutes to get hot but that’s hold pipes baby. This place has character. I would stay again.

Great hotel if you don’t need anything fancy! It’s funky it’s weird it’s run down, the water takes forever to heat up, the paint is peeling, but I think it’s adorable and rustic. I would definitely stay here again. Beds are comfy. Breakfast was great. Good views. Easy walk into town.
